It's been exactly 10 days since money heist season 4 premiered on Netflix and the Emmy award winning crime series has received numerous reviews from film critics and fans worldwide.
Anyone familiar with heist dramas knows that the excitement lies in watching a gang of thieves organize sophisticated plans, and the tension lies in the unforeseen complications which threaten disaster as they implement them. After waiting for exactly 8 months and 15 days, Netflix once again disappointed me with the release of money heist part 4. The whole season made absolutely no sense. This 4th season is just like that friend who is livening up the party but eventually overstays their welcome.
After
the 2nd season when the mint heist was over, I had planned to stop
watching money heist but couldn't resist the temptation to watch the 3rd
season due to the internet over-hype. I wanted to see if the hype was worth it
but so what, I was disappointed. Also, the scene at the end of this 4th
season where the pregnant outlaw detective finds the Professor's hideout feels
like part 2 all over again where the Professor was almost arrested by detective
Raquel (now Lisbon). The bank of Spain plan was an impeccable one and should
have gone accordingly if the Professor had listened to his own advice of “not
falling in love or developing a personal relationship with a member of the
team” but he didn’t and things began to fall apart after he decided to bring
Lisbon to the heist. Being the mastermind, the Professor spent most of his
screen time trying to save his girlfriend instead of pulling the strings and
actually pulling off the gold heist. It wasn’t until the final couple of
episodes that the series starts to slot back into a familiar rhythm and it
feels a little too late by then. There is also a marked increase in on-screen
brutality — what used to be a battle of wits has boiled over into a slinging
match with plenty of blood and violence which seems like a failed ploy to
distract audiences from the fact that for most of the run-time we are simply
seeing nothing new.
The
main point of the series feels distorted from what it was before. This 4th
season is a disappointing effort and a far cry from the awesome quality we’ve
come to expect from the series. Netflix’s desire to try and change the show
from its traditional format into something new ultimately backfired and the
series has obviously lost its way, at the same time losing the rhythm and
momentum it managed to sustain after the previous seasons. The third and fourth
part were released too early, and the show creator (Alex Pina) should have been
given more time to complete these two parts (3 & 4) and give them a better
story than the previous ones because the series was originally intended to be a
limited two-part series and the extension was never part of the plan from the
beginning. I hope they make season 5 the last one because we are at a stage where the show has clearly overstayed it’s welcome. The real money heist fans
deserved a better part 3 & 4.
I
know this is just another TV show, but after seeing season 4, the best review score
that I have, based on my views and some users' opinions in a discussion hub for
La Casa de Papel is 4/10.
A
poll on popular review website, thereviewgeek.com shows Money Heist Season 4
leading with 40% for what has been the biggest TV disappointment of 2020 so far.
La casa de Papel is followed by TV shows like “Doctor who” (16%), “Grey’s
anatomy” (16%), “Dracula” (15%), “Star trek: Picard” (12%) and “Emergence” (1%).
The New Indian Express termed it “A lukewarm attempt to live up to exalted
standards” while British online publisher, The Independent refers to it as “The
most perfectly constructed trash on TV”. However, after 31 episodes, could this
be another example of a TV show that’s lost its vibes and past its sell-by
date now? Let us know by sharing your opinions in the comment section.
Bella
ciao!!!
