Money Heist creator and writer Álex Pina has revealed he came under pressure to cut major character Berlin from the show because of his "out-of-date views".

A charismatic terminally ill jewel thief, Berlin (Pedro Alonso) was actually one of the most popular characters on the Spanish Netflix series, and fans were sad to see him go when he was killed by the police.

However, in the recent Netflix documentary Money Heist: The Phenomenon, Pina revealed that there were calls for him to drop the character from the show entirely because of his misogynistic ways.

"Someone said to me, 'This character doesn't fit with the times. You should take him out of the series," said Pina.

"I said I had no intention of taking him out of the series. He's a misogynist, narcissist and psychopath in many ways.

"But we could have a character like that in the series and the audience could freely decide whose side they're on, right?"

Suggesting that Berlin may have actually been part of the show's appeal, he added: "If television is bland it's boring because less things happen.

"The audience wants things to happen, and there's nothing better than a villain who we can empathise with."

Alonso also appears in the documentary, and it's safe to say he's slightly bemused by his character's popularity.

"People need to get their heads checked because I'm sure he's not the character you'd want your daughter to marry.

"[But] that dominant side to him, his leadership, repulses us but it gives us a certain sense of safety."

What To Expect From Money Heist Season 5

Season 4 of Money Heist, Netflix's high-stakes bank-robbing thriller series, leaves the story on a tense cliffhanger - so here's what we know so far about Money Heist season 5. Created by Álex Pina, Money Heist debuted on Spanish network TV before making its way to Netflix in late 2017. Following the success of the first two parts of the story, Netflix renewed Money Heist for Part 3 and Part 4 in April 2018.

Money Heist focuses on a gang of daring robbers, led by a heist mastermind called the Professor (Álvaro Morte), who take on big targets in search of big prizes. Money Heist's first two parts saw the gang lead an assault on the Royal Mint of Spain, and the second two parts reunited the survivors for a robbery of the Bank of Spain. The team includes narrator Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó), young hacker Rio (Miguel Herrán), and expert forger Nairobi (Alba Flores).
By the end of Money Heist season 4 the assault on the Bank of Spain is still not yet complete, with the Professor focusing his attention on a daring rescue of Lisbon (Itziar Ituño) from police clutches. The final cliffhanger is overt set-up for Money Heist season 5 - but will that happen, and when can we expect to see it? Here's what we know so fa
MONEY HEIST SEASON 5 RENEWAL STATUS

Though Money Heist hasn't yet been renewed for season 5 (which, based on the current structure, would consist of Part 5 and Part 6 being announced together), a renewal seems very likely. Season 4 was ranked highly in Netflix's US Top 10 most-watched titles in the wake of its release, which is especially impressive for a Spanish-language series. The streaming service has many international series in its library, but few have broken through to US audiences in the same way that Money Heist has. Expect a renewal announcement by the end of May 2020.

When fans can expect Money Heist season 5 to release isn't quite as certain as its chances of renewal. The film and TV production industry has been put on lockdown around the world due to the coronavirus pandemic, and Spain has been hit particularly hard by the virus, with more than 15,000 deaths as of the time of writing. Money Heist Part 5 and Part 6 would presumably be filmed back to back, like previous seasons. In the case of Part 3 and Part 4, the first set of episodes were released nine months after filming began, so a similar schedule would likely apply to Money Heist season 5. If the coronavirus lockdowns are lifted by fall 2020, expect more episodes of Money Heist in late 2021.

In the season finale of Money Heist season 4, the Professor enlists an outside team to pull off a "David Copperfield" trick with Lisbon as she's prepared for transfer to prison. Using looped security footage, and a poor unfortunate kidnapped body double, Lisbon is broken free and taken by helicopter to the roof of the Bank of Spain, where the rest of the team are waiting for her. The police realize too late that the helicopter arriving at the bank is not theirs, and Lisbon joyfully reunites with the others. They declare that their war is not over and they will finish it "for Nairobi," who was killed by the bank's chief of security, Gandía (José Manuel Poga).

Meanwhile, just as the Professor is celebrating his success with Lisbon's breakout, someone unexpected arrives at his hideout: Inspector Alice Sierra (Najwa Nimri), who was fired after her unlawful actions were exposed. Sierra is now on her own vendetta against the Professor, and there's no telling how far she'll go now that she's been unleashed from her former job. Money Heist season 5 will presumably conclude the Bank of Spain heist with the team's escape - though it may come at the cost of more lives. Held at gunpoint by Sierra, it will take all of the Professor's ingenuity to escape his current situation, and in the meantime his crew may be left to devise their own.
